About Rockland

Rockland is an unincorporated community. Mining was the principal industry in the mid 1800’s.

The Rockland Mine opened in 1847. The Minnesota Mine was operating in 1857, and was renamed to National in 1861. Three adjacent plats were consolidated into Rockland in 1864.

The Victoria Copper Mine was financed by British interests and was named for Queen Victoria.

The miners were Finns, Croatian, Austrian, Italian, Canadian, Swedish, and Cornish.
